“Whatever were gains to me, I now consider loss for the sake of Christ.” (Philippians 3:7)
In other words, only what is both good and eternal matters, and only Jesus is both truly good and eternal. If the world wants to know what is worth pursuing, your contentment, my contentment can show them exactly where to look, right? Unless, of course, we aren’t content.
We have to be honest: Discontentment is a problem, even among those who claim to follow Jesus. We’ve forgotten the art of finding ourselves in Christ alone and have begun searching for the kind of contentment the world craves but will never find. Yes, we hope for the eternal blessings of Jesus, but in the meantime, we want the temporal blessings of the passing world. And while God often lets us have them – He is the Blesser after all – He never wants us to embrace them over Him. All our love is to be invested first in Him. Everything else must be secondary. Everything.
The truth is, our contentment in God honors Him and gives witness of this to the world. When we strive after self-fulfillment and find again-and-again that it eludes our grasp, we are indicating that Jesus isn’t quite sufficient. If, on the other hand, we forsake all else to wholly embrace Jesus, as the Apostle Paul has done, we become shining witnesses to a world who is in a futile pursuit of worthless things. We, We Have Found The Treasure others have never considered. We, we get to point them daily to The One who created them to be complete in Him – Jesus. And what a treasure He is!
Have a satisfying weekend. Make it better by worshiping The Lord with those who have discovered that they are most fulfilled in life when they are most satisfied in Christ.
All For Jesus – Nothing More, Nothing Less, Nothing Else.
