As followers of Jesus, we do have new clothes, the New Testament tell us. Paul uses the metaphor here in Ephesians, but the garments of Jesus are referred to elsewhere as well. These aren’t the clothes of first century Israel; they are the character of those who love Jesus and are being conformed to His image. They have the power to change how we look and how we feel. They are the ultimate fashion statement.
“Put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” (Ephesians 4:24)
Paul uses this metaphor to tell us to change. We are to take off the old self and cast it aside. The new self that will make us look like God Himself is ready to be tried on. We must shed the garments that made us comfortable in the culture of this world and begin dressing like those living in the Kingdom of God. After all, that’s where we want to fit in and be all about.
So, what fashion statement are we making with our character? Does our attire fit better with the culture of the world or the culture of God’s Kingdom? It can’t be both. The two cultures are too different. We must decide which crowd we want to fit in with and then dress appropriately.
As we decide, let’s remember this: The clothes of The Kingdom will never fade, will never go out of style, and will never look inappropriate. They are, after all, the same clothes worn by The King Himself. He gives them out freely, but He accepts no excuses for not wearing them. They are available to all who will put them on. So, let’s be aware of how we dress today. When it comes to character, Our Sense Of Fashion Matters.
Have a joyous weekend. Make it better by honoring The LORD with those who love His sense of fashion, because they know holiness is always impressive to God and never goes out of style.
