It’s Friday…God Clearly Disagrees

Human beings – all of us – suffer, in some form, from an identity crisis. We don’t fully know who we are, what we are created to do, or how we are meant to go about it. We learn to make assumptions about those questions over time, as every culture and every family develops some sort of identity based on their perception of how the world works. But the identity crisis isn’t really resolved until we get into the Bible and see what God says about us.

Before  we do that, we are prone to discouragement. We might feel as if we are nothing more than dust in the wind, as if the world is a product of random events under the laws of physics. But there’s no hint of randomness in Scripture; in fact, just the opposite. The world, and every member of it, was created for a purpose. As followers of Jesus, we serve a God with a plan.

“Before you were born, I set you apart.”  (Jeremiah 1:5)

The prophet Jeremiah had a unique call to an unresponsive people, and God had set him apart for his particular task. But just because God is explicit about Jeremiah’s purpose doesn’t mean He disregards the rest of us. We all have a purpose. We were all set apart before we were born. Psalm 139:16 says that all of our days were ordained before we ever lived them. That doesn’t mean we’re robots, but it does mean God has clear intentions for us. According to Scripture, there is nothing accidental about our existence.

That’s comforting to know, because people suffer much anxiety about their origins and their future. Many are convinced their lives are meaningless; others believe they’ve missed out on God’s plan and that it’s too late to get back in on it; and others are so busy focusing on the day-to-day demands that all they can think about is surviving. Centuries of the human condition and free will have convinced huge portions of society that life is pointless. In the call of Jeremiah, God Clearly Disagrees.

Let’s remember that whenever we’re tempted to give into a spirit of discouragement. God has known us and known about us since before we were born. There’s a point to our existence, and He has made our life count, is making our life count, and will continue to do so. That’s fantastically good news.

Have a purpose-filled weekend. Make it better by worshiping The LORD with those who know they were created to accomplish a definite service for Him which He has not committed to another.

All For Jesus – Nothing More, Nothing Less, Nothing Else.

“He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, The King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see, to Him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.” (1 Timothy 6:15b-16)
