It’s Friday…Break Out Of The Cage

One of the deepest human needs is a sense of significance. We want to know our life counts for something. The thought that we might be “dust in the wind” or some small fish in a big pond can be utterly depressing. We all want to count for something and do things that will last. Everyone wants to be fruitful.

“They will spring up like grass in a meadow, like poplar trees by flowing streams.”  (Isaiah 44:4)

God promises that. He says that those who live for Him, who are planted by His streams, will flourish. They will bear fruit in season and the fruit will last forever. While the whole feels as if it is chasing after the wind, wondering if there is any meaning to life, we who live for God can rest confidently in the fact that we have been planted by Him – the Master Gardener – and watered by a Living Spring. We are offered a far greater significance than we ever thought we craved.

Contrast that promise with the promise of our age. Advertisements everywhere tell us what matters most in life, and the list is depressingly superficial. Common wisdom tells us that just being happy is enough, but deep down inside, we know that earthly happiness is temporary and will never be enough. We are led to believe that working hard and saving for a comfortable retirement is the epitome of true success, but we weren’t wired to be content with such short-term success. Whatever values the world instills in us, we still can’t be ultimately content until we Break Out Of The Cage that keeps us confined to time and space. What our spirits desire most is to last forever.

If God is our driving passion, we will. He Himself has promised. And not only will we last forever, the work that we are able to do for Him and with Him in this short time and small space can be planted and watered in a way that will make it eternally fruit-bearing. We can leverage our time, our talents, our money, our relationships, our spiritual gifts – everything God has given us – as seeds that sprout forever. Forever? Yes, forever! And, in the landscape of life that means one thing: Our search for significance is over.

Have a fruitful weekend. Make it better by worshiping The LORD with those who enjoy being planted by the everlasting stream of His refreshment because they have first-hand knowledge and a keen awareness that the best is yet to come.

All For Jesus – Nothing More, Nothing Less, Nothing Else.

“He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, The King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see, to Him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.” (1 Timothy 6:15b-16)
