One day the apostle Paul was inspired to write to the followers of Jesus living in the sophisticated city of Corinth. In his writing he appears to make a rather boastful claim. A claim that would not go over well in our current “politically correct” culture. It probably didn’t go over too well in the culture of Corinth also. This is what he boasted,
“We have the mind of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 2:16)
What a treasured truth and amazing revelation. Yet, it is almost unthinkable; the mind of the One through whom the entire universe was created, the origin of all wisdom, available to us? Yes, yes, indeed.
But what does that mean? It means we are not limited to human reasoning. As followers of Jesus, we have supernatural access to unlimited reality from His eternal perspective. Because of God’s Word, we know the direction of history and where its leading; we know how to escape this fallen world; and we know who holds all power in the palm of His hand. This vast, incomprehensible treasure is ours – If We Will Accept It.
That’s our problem. We often resort to lesser means of wisdom because we’re unaware that the mind of Christ is accessible, or we’re unable to believe such an extravagant promise. But if we can’t believe it, we can’t have it.
The mind of Christ is ours through the Spirit of God, who comes to us only through faith. The Spirit teaches us the deeper things of God and reveals them to His people. Such things are foolish to the world, but they are truth nevertheless – truth that we can know and based our lives on.
We all have our own mind. If Jesus Christ is our Lord, we have His too. But which would you rather depend on? I think we all know that it is best for us to begin each day disavowing our own wisdom.
Let’s acknowledge that on any given day, we don’t have the understanding to make the decisions we will face. We do not know all the details or future implications of any decision. Therefore, let’s admit our utter dependence on the mind of Christ, ask for His wisdom moment-by-moment, and believe.
Have a rewarding weekend. Make it better by worshiping The LORD with those who are very aware that their best odds of thriving in life are when they let Him lead.
