The Bible makes some tremendous promises. Here is one of them:
“If you make the Most High your dwelling – even The LORD, who is my Refuge – then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent.” (Psalm 91:9-10)
How can any rational person accept such a claim? Didn’t Charlie Kirk live and speak to make much about The LORD? Didn’t good Christian people die in the World Trade Center disaster? Didn’t faith-filled soldiers die in wars and other brutal places around the globe? Haven’t floods, earthquakes, famine, and crime been rather indiscriminate, ravaging both followers of Jesus and those not, in the same places on the same days?
Could it be that the psalmist didn’t think this one through before he penned such words of promise? Could have the Holy Spirit of God truly been the inspiration behind such hope that seems too shallow?
All of these thoughts and questions do not get to the heart of the issue. Please don’t misread or misunderstand – the Bible is absolutely true – it has proven itself to us on many occasions. So, what does this promise mean? How can God assure us of such immunity to the world’s brutal abuses? This is how. He insists on one vital Truth: We are not of this world.
No doubt, we were all born of fragile flesh with an imperfect nature into this world. We have all certainly proven ourselves on many occasions throughout our lives that we fall short of God’s standard. But God’s Word contains glorious promises for those who have dedicated their lives to Him. When we confess our sin to God, He forgives us, and we are reborn in that moment from above. Yes, no matter what spiritual slum we sprang from, we now are a part of God’s family, and it is a place of ultimate safety. Even when we die, that is not the end of our lives.
The Bible is honest about martyrs. Stephen was stoned to death, Peter was crucified upside down, Paul was likely beheaded, John was exiled, and Charlie Kirk was assassinated. And they all knew this verse inside and out. They believed it with all their heart. The spirit within them had inspired it centuries before. It is Truth.
Those martyrs, including Charlie, their lives were miraculously preserved time and again; none died before his time. Moreover, they knew the real meaning of disaster and death. And they knew the true geography of their eternal home; they lived their lives with an eye on the Kingdom of God that is not threatened by anything or anyone in this world. And so can we. For people in God’s family, who are in His Kingdom, There Is Nothing To Fear, ever.
Have a rest-filled weekend. Make it better by worshiping The LORD with those who live with confidence and courage because they know God and know they will live with Him forever.
